Government and Law Enforcement Employment Matters
Our lawyers frequently counsel and defend numerous cities and counties, their officers, executives, and managers. Effective representation in this area requires us to be sensitive to both legal and political realities helping clients balance the legal requirements for openness of government with the need for discretion and confidentiality to maintain their effectiveness and public confidence. We have developed particular expertise in matters involving management decisions affecting public safety officers and issues.
We advise counties, cities and their internal agencies about appropriate organizational and hierarchal structures, policies and procedures; disciplinary issues; employment and personnel matters; constitutional law issues; open meeting and open records requirements; and the myriad of other issues that cities commonly encounter. We defend our municipal clients and their officials when such issues arise in federal and state court litigation.
We assume various diverse roles, acting as our municipal and county clients’ advisors and counselors when formulating management decisions, as advocates representing them in internal administrative and appeal hearings, and even as hearing officers and arbitrators hearing and deciding their disputes.
